PARKERSBURG - Olivia Collett just started high school as a freshman on Thursday at PHS - and got lost in the myriad of hallways.

But Collett, just age 13, of Parkersburg didn't get lost on the News and Sentinel Half Marathon two-mile course Saturday morning in winning the women's championship by nearly a 10-second-margin,

For Collett, who ran cross country and track at VanDevender Middle School, it was her first time ever in a two-mile event and she was clocked at 12:15.7 in coming in 31st overall.

Collett was followed across the finish line eight places later, at 39th overall, by the second-place woman, Madison Trippett of Parkersburg, in 12:25.1 and then No. 3 placer Desirae Schoonover of West Union, 40th overall in 12:25.2.

Both Trippett and Schoonover were in the female 10-14 age category, like Collett.

Collett began running at Vandy in sixth grade and competes "mostly in 5Ks whenever I do road races, but I did an 8K a couple of weeks ago and now a two mile."

But despite winning Saturday, "I didn't get a very good start," related Collett, as "I actually started in the back" of the pack. "And I didn't pass the girl that was in first place until a little bit before the finish line."

With the win, Collett also claimed the title of Road Runners Club of America West Virginia two-mile women's champion,

Her "next step" is running in the News and Sentinel half marathon itself, "because I actually do better in longer distances. But that'll be maybe a couple years yet."

At PHS, Collett has already been involved this summer in cross county practice under head coach Larry Games. She and all of her Big Red teammates ran Saturday in the two mile, "because it was sort of like a race for us."
