BEVERLY - Thunderstorms? Torrential downpour in the forecast? No problem. Despite the less than favorable forecast, there was no keeping the running community from turning out in full force for the ninth annual Bunny Hop 5K road race in Beverly Saturday morning as roughly 500 people took part in the community run. "I had a pretty good feeling unless it was a tornado we would see decent numbers," said Diane Wainwright, one of the race coordinators. The weather may not have gotten quite that bad, but a steady drizzle greeted runners by the time they made the first turn of the race. Just the same, it was a great day for a run. "I don't mind splashing in the puddles," laughed former Fort Frye distance standout Jeremy Anderson, who won the race for the fourth time. "I love coming here. I always make sure I can run this one," he said. Amber Hanes of Belpre was the first female to cross the 5K run finish line. Sarah Biehl was runner-up. Tim Finkel of Marietta was the first male to break the 5K walk tape, and Donna Graham of Lowell was the first female. With literally hundreds of runners camped out at the starting line at Fort Frye High School, this year's Bunny Hop was just another community gathering. There were the serious road-race runners like Caldwell's Brian Hesson and Athens' Dave Miller, but there were also the casual folks who just wanted to run and socialize with friends and people they may see just a few times a year. "It (turnout) is remarkable and it's a testament to the community and to the enthusiasm that these people bring to everything," Wainwright said. For Anderson, now a standout runner with the Shawnee State track and cross country teams, running through his home town again the day before Easter is a combination of both. "It's always fun to come home and run with some of the old teammates and friends," Anderson said. Winning the Bunny Hop for the fourth time in eight tries, Anderson has emerged as a perennial favorite at the race, which he joking calls a home course advantage. But he's not alone in the event anymore, as two of his brothers and his sister, Jessica, all ran the race with him this year. For the first 400 meters, the two younger Andersons were even ahead of their older brother and race winner, prompting smiles from Anderson at the finish line. "We had a good run today," Anderson said. Proceeds from the annual event go to the American Legion Auxiliary, with the majority of the funds going to the Beverly/Waterford fire department and emergency squad. This year was the first year that the race has featured computerized timing, an addition geared towards the serious runners that like competing in the annual road race. Always set for the Saturday before Easter each year, the Bunny Hop has grown every year since its inception when about 100 people were all that took part. Now, the event is as much a part of the Easter celebration for some families, like the Andersons, as the Easter Bunny is. "This is a popular road race in this area," Anderson said.
