Reta wins third Half Marathon

PARKERSBURG – An Ethiopian Saturday morning won The Parkersburg News and Sentinel Half Marathon for the third straight year.


Alene Reta, 27, crossed the Market Street finish line at 1 hour, 4 minutes and 15 seconds, off his mark from 2008, but well ahead of the pack in the 23rd running of the annual Parkersburg road race. Reta ran the race with a time 1 hour, 2 minutes and 52 seconds.


The course record was set in 1990 by Steve Kogo with a time of 1 hour, 2 minutes and 25 seconds.


Also winning the two mile race for the third year in a row was Tyler Cantley, 19, of Vincent who  posted a time of 9 minutes, 54 seconds.


In other victories, Hellen Jemutai, 27, of Kenya won the women's half marathon with a time of 1 hour, 15 minutes and 57 seconds.


Ben Hulin of South Bend, Ind., won the wheelchair race.


Gideon Mutsiva, 42, of Eufuala won the Masters Men with a time of 1 hour, 11 minutes and 57 second. Masters Women winner was Albina Gallyamova, 45, of Russia with a time of 1 hour, 20 minutes and 14 seconds.


Winner of the Grand Masters Men was Thomas Dever of Terre Haute, Ind., with a time of 1 hour, 16 minutes and 20 seconds.


Lee DePietro, 51, of Ruxton, Md., won the Grand Masters Women with a time of 1 hour, 25 minutes and 39 seconds.
