A first for the half marathon: matchmaking

Road run played role in couple’s upcoming wedding

July 17, 2009
By JIM BUTTA

PARKERSBURG-During its 22 years of existence, the News and Sentinel Half Marathon has served as the launching point for a number of running careers.

On Saturday, July 25, 2009, however, the 13.1-mile race will enter a new realm of involvement-match maker. That is the day when 29-year old Josh Ordway and 25-year old Becki Michael will become husband and wife.

So, what does this have to do with the 23rd annual News and Sentinel Half Marathon which takes place on Saturday, Aug. 22?

Becki Michael and Josh Ordway started dating after running the News and Sentinel Half Marathon in 2007. They’re getting married later this month.

"We started dating after the 2007 race," Michael explains. "So, I guess you could say that the half marathon brought us together."

Michael, a graduate of the University of Akron, and Ordway had met earlier at a 5-mile race in Westlake, Ohio, in 2006, but nothing came from that first meeting.

The duo's second encounter, however, had much different results.
