First Road Race of the Summer

June 10, 2019 - Lauren Leaman
Anyone else love the atmosphere of a home town road race? Me too. When asked to run the Chick-fil-a 10k though I laughed. Yes, I run track in college but nothing more than two laps, and that's pushing it.

The longest road race I have ever competed in is the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day at City Park, so 6 miles is a little too far me. Long story short I agreed to compete in the two mile race, my first of the summer. I've never really been a distance runner, but I am convinced I was suppose to be one. I don't think I will ever allow myself to make the transition until my track career is over because running twenty four circles around a track does not interest me in the least. I made a huge goal of wanting to be the first female finisher but never thought I would come close to it.

As anyone who has the goal of going for gold my heart was racing at the starting line. When the starting gun fired I took off with the leaders. Not even one hundred meters in I questioned what I got myself into; I couldn't have been the only one right? I came through the first mile with a personal best time of 5:40, finished with a personal best of 13:17 and reached my goal of being the first female finisher. I'll admit there were times were I wanted to stop and walk, but who doesn't have that thought at least once mid run?

If you ever want to try a new race, do it. As my coach always says “mind over legs”. If you are at that point in the race when you are so tired you just want to give up, that's when the race becomes a test of your mental game. If you have to slow down, slow down. If you have to walk, walk. The focus is not how you finish the race, but that you finished.

I hope to get the chance to compete against some of you in the News and Sentinel two mile August 17. Prices increase in just one week, be sure to register now!

What is your favorite summer race?
